Head Football Coach George De La Torre is in his 38th year of coaching football. Coach De La Torre also has over 30 years of wrestling coaching experience. He is a native of Miami, Arizona. He holds a BA degree in History and Physical Education from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah where he was selected as the Defensive Team Captain by his peers He also has a Master’s Degree in Education from Northern Arizona University. His teaching and coaching career includes Gilber HS, Miami HS, Mesa Community College, Westwood HS, Red Mountain HS, Skyline HS, South Mountain HS, Florence HS, and Dobson HS prior to joining the San Tan Foothills family.
Coach De La Torre is a member of the Miami High School Hall of Fame. He is a member of the MesaSchools Hall of Fame as part of the coaching staff on the Westwood High School Track and Field State Championship Team of 1988. Coach was selected 5A Coach of the Year by the Arizona Football Coaches Association, the Metro Football Coach of the Year, and Chennel 12 FRriday Night Fever’s Big School Coach of the Year. He was also recognized nationally as the 2007 Coach of the Year by the National Football League and the Arizona Cardinals.
Eric Hjamlarson - Varsity Assistant Coach - I was born in Flagstaff, AZ in 1978. I was raised in Pinetop-Lakeside for the majority of my life. I enjoy fishing, hunting, and snowboarding in the White Mountains. I graduated from Blue Ridge High School in 1997. I was a 3 yeat varsity football player at Blue Ridge High School and was a member of 3 State Championship Teams. I played college football at Eastern Arizona and the University of Arizona. I graduated from Northern Arizona University in ‘03 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education.
Matt Porr - Varsity Assistant Coach - I am a native of Arizona. I grew up on a ranch outside of Payson prior to moving to Mesa. I attended Red Mountain HS, earned first team wide receiver/DB and played in the 2000 5A all-star game. I went on to play at MCC and earned all JUCO 1st team defense and a scholarship to Portland State. I graduated with a Bechelor’s degree and was able to play arena football in Florenca for the Thunder. I am blessed with an amazing, beautiful family. I just had a daughter on the 9th of August and I have a 16-month old daughter and three step children. My wife and I have been together for four year. I am also blessed to have my parents who support me every day. I believe that “the body performs what the mind harbors.” We aim to build character, responsibility, accountability, and soon to come a State Championship! I’ve known Coach De La Torre for 21 years. He has been a mentor, a coach, and I’ve anxiously waited to go to battle with him.
Jace Hulsey - Varsity Assistant Coach - I I attended Copper Basin K-8 and graduated from Florenc EHigh School in 2011. I was a three sport student athlete at FHS. I was the starting quarterback at FHS for three years for Coach De La Torre and earned All-Conference honors in 2009-2010. I attended South Mountain Community College as a student athlete and played Catcher on the baseball team. I currently work in Florence as a Corrections Officer. My parents, along with three sisters and one brother also live in STV
Rick Romero - Varsity Assistant Coach - I am a counselor at San Tan Foothills High School. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and am the Head Coach fro the Freshman team. This is my 20th year coaching football and baseball at the high school level. I have coached at Ray High School, Florence High School, Poston Butte High School, Walker Butte K-8, and San Tan Foothills High School.
Tomas Melero - Varsity Assistant Coach - This is my first year coaching at the varsity level as linebacker and receiver coach. I am excited about being the Freshmen Defensive Coordinator, this will be a great season for the San Tan Foothills High School Sabercats!
